What is regime-aware portfolio construction?
Reviewed against the platform's code on Sep 23, 2026
Regime-aware portfolio construction makes the market regime an input to how a portfolio is built — which exposures are preferred, how positions are sized and how much risk is allowed — instead of applying one set of rules in every market condition.
Why it matters
The same position carries different risk in a calm market and in a credit crisis. A portfolio that ignores the regime discovers the change through its drawdown.
How it works
Regime information can tilt sector exposures, scale gross exposure, and tighten risk limits. A common safeguard is asymmetry: an overlay may reduce risk when conditions worsen but never increase it automatically.
How Opulence Alpha applies it
In Opulence Alpha the regime conditions the forecasts' uncertainty and the risk limits, and each regime axis publishes sector tilts — the historical sensitivity of each GICS sector to that axis, estimated over all history up to the day. The regime overlay on gross exposure can only reduce risk.

Questions
- What is sector rotation by regime?
- Tilting toward the sectors that have historically done better in the current regime, and away from those that have done worse.
- Does regime-aware mean market timing?
- Not necessarily. It usually means adjusting sizing, tilts and risk limits, not moving in and out of the market entirely.
- Why only reduce risk automatically?
- Because an overlay that can also add risk in good times can amplify errors; tighten-only overlays are a common governance choice.
